Understanding Policies in Social Housing

What is a policy in social housing?

A policy is a set of rules and plans that explain how things are done.
In social housing, it helps decide who gets a home, how homes are offered, and what customers can expect.

Why should customers get involved with the policy?

Because your views help make sure the policy is fair and works for everyone.
You can share your ideas and help improve how things are done.

How does the policy affect customers?

It affects who can apply, how long you wait, and what support you get.
It helps decide what happens next when you need a home.

Why is it important for customers to know about the policy?

Knowing the policy helps you understand your rights, choices, and what to expect.
It means you can ask questions and feel more confident when talking to your housing provider.

    What is a statement?

A statement is a short and simple version of a longer policy.
It explains the main points in a way that’s easier to understand.

     Why do we have statements?

    • Policies can be long and full of formal words.
    • Statements help break things down so more people can understand them.
    • They make sure everyone knows what to expect.

How does a statement help me?

    • It gives you a quick overview of what the policy is about.
    • It helps you understand how things work without reading lots of pages.
    • It shows you what your rights and choices are.
    • It helps you feel more confident when talking to your housing provider.

What is a focus group and how do the work?

A focus group is a small meeting where customers can share their thoughts about a service or topic. It’s a chance to come together with Citizen to speak honestly and help us improve what we do.

We run focus groups in two ways:

    • In person –  held at a location chosen for each group
    • Online – using Microsoft Teams

Focus groups usually last 1 to 2 hours, depending on what we’re talking about. Don’t worry we will always let you know the date, time, and how long it will take before the group starts.

At the group you would fill in a form for the expenses you are caliming for, that could be bus fare or miliiage if you use a car.

    Will there be refreshments?

For meetings lasting over 1.5 hours, we provide lunch, along with hot and cold drinks.

Do I get anything for taking part?

Yes, we offer thank you vouchers as a token of our appreciation for your time and feedback. The amount may vary depending on the type of group you're involved with, but we will always inform you of the value before you join the group.

Can I take part in more than one project?
